I think it'd be nice to include mentor and apprentice sign-ups; it'd be a list of available mentors, available apprentices, and current training pairs. That way apprentices can more easily find mentors, and player's who don't want to be mentors don't have to be. c:
So the way I imagined it working, was that apprentices would automatically get added to the list, but warriors would have to request to be added to the "available mentors". Staff can then randomly assign unpaired apprentices to the available mentors on the list, as to avoid favoritism like you said.
It may not be entirely necessary, but I feel like this is a good way to avoid people who just don't want to play as a mentor getting forcibly assigned to be one just because they were available. It's also a good way, in my opinion, to keep from publicly pressuring people to say yes, or making members feel singled out because "their cat was picked and not mine!! You're playing favorites!!". It just seems like a more unbiased system to me.
It's just a little suggestion, I'm sure whichever way you pick'll work out fine. Definitely would love to see mentors being ASKED before being picked though, some people just don't like RPing that and it's not fair to force them. Slitherr
sometimes i create a warrior or apprentice to perfectly pair with the opposite, and at that point it was a concerted effort between i and the other rp-er. at that point, we request to be paired together. i think it is acceptable to sometimes place a request for a certain mentor/apprentice because it shows the interest of the rp-ers to actually get the training done
